5 common mistakes of web design and web development

Big Mistake #1

Constructing a Website with Flash - In a new study, top internet marketers found that having a website created with Flash, really reduced the response from prospects and clients by a large amount as 370 percent?

Here's why

Your prospects and clients are in all likelihood visiting your site using all sorts of varied computers, connection speeds and internet configuration settings...

What may appear magnificent to one visitor may not even show up for another! You could very easily have splurged out hundreds or even thousands of dollars to have a website produced using the Flash technology, only to find out that some of your visitors won’t see it! (Not to state the loading times can cause your visitor to close your site, never to revisit again.)

Big Mistake #2

The "Internet Catalogue" Tactic - You see this all over the place. Excellent, sincere and industrious people get online to sell their products or services, and have a site constructed for them that contains a link to almost everything they offer on one page. Their thinking goes along the lines of, "...well, I don't want to leave any person out. If they visit my site, I have to make sure I have what they're looking for..." – These thoughts could not be more far from the truth.

Here's why

There's a very old rule that goes way back to the launch of direct-marketing on the web, taught by the affluent, and well-respected internet marketers of all time...

“When you show your visitors too many options, they become bewildered and aren't sure what to do next. Bewildered people by no means purchase anything."

Big Mistake #3

Optimising Your Sales Site for the Search Engines - You'll see this taught in nearly every "internet marketing" course, manual or eBook out there... "You must optimise every page of your website for the search engines!" - In fact, this sham training is received as 'gospel truth' so repeatedly that nearly all web designers will suggest to do this for you at no, or for little rate...

What they don't know is that specific words and phrases have to be either re-worded (to make it "keyword rich") or pulled out entirely, simply to be regarded favourably by the search engines - and this might wipe out your sales, rapidly overnight.

Here's why

When you appointed a web designer to optimise your sales page to go higher in the search engine rankings, you're going to have to give up the pulling-power of your sales message just to get higher rankings. Certainly, this bring about lots more traffic, however what benefit is all that traffic across the globe, if your visitors turn up at your website and aren't obliged to read why should they buy your product or service?

"You must always have a "balance" of SEO (Search-Engine-Optimisation} mixed with promotional copy designed to sell your services or products..."

Wrong Again! - The truth is that you should never optimise your sales page for the search engines. Instead, you should create little "entry pages" for each keyword related to your product or service, (highly optimised for the Search Engines) and have them link to your main sales website.

Big Mistake #4

Having a "Graphics-Based" Website – {Of course, graphics can surely aid us to imagine a specific product or service, situation or circumstance... However do you understand that having a graphically-driven site can really sidetrack your guest away from your sales letter?

In spite of everything, your sales letter is the number 1 central factor on a website that brings in money. If your visitors are distracted by your "professional graphics" than your sales letter... you have just lost one more deal.

Here is why

You've got roughly 7 seconds starting from the time your guest gets to your website, to the time they decide whether to purchase your service or product, get the information or depart. If you've got a graphically-intensive website, your website will probably still be loading beyond your seven-second time threshold.

That's a "buyer-killer" in itself nevertheless, the real reason lies within the truth that the greater, brighter and extra beautiful your graphics are, the more they will divert your visitor from your sales copy. And if your visitor is sidetracked even for 1 second, it could indicate the difference between getting the sale, and losing a buyer.

Big Mistake #5

Design a website with no marketing know-how – The majority of web designers have no clue how to make money from the internet, with nothing but their design services. It's not their fault, they simply have no or very little marketing and sales experience. In the end, they are only website designers...

Yet, having your website designed by someone with little internet marketing experience is like purchasing a car with no engine... it won't go anywhere, and it'll just throw away your money and time!
